Salamanca
Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is often hailed as one of Spain’s most stunning cities, and it’s easy to see why. Constructed almost entirely from golden sandstone, the city radiates a warm, rosy glow, especially as the sun sets, creating a magical ambiance.
Perched on a gentle hill overlooking the serene River Tormes, Salamanca exudes tranquillity despite its tumultuous history. Originally founded by the Romans – who built the impressive 400-yard bridge still standing today – it has witnessed conquests by Hannibal, the Moors, and even battles between the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon.
The city is renowned for its two iconic cathedrals and its prestigious university, the oldest in Spain, established in 1215. For four centuries, this institution was one of the world’s leading centres of learning, with remarkable legacy that includes records of the Spanish Inquisition, contributes to international law, and a thriving student body of 12,000 as early as the 16th Century.
During your visit, step into beautifully preserved lecture halls with vaulted ceilings and explore the historic library, where Christopher Columbus once presented his findings to the greatest minds of the era.
After breakfast, we embark on a guided tour of this extraordinary city, taking in its architectural splendour and uncovering its fascinating history.
Free afternoon
The rest of the day is yours to explore Salamanca at your own pace. Be sure to visit the city’s two magnificent cathedrals – the ‘newer’ one, built in the 16th Century, is a masterpiece of Gothic and Baroque architecture. While their exteriors dominate the skyline, the intricate interiors are equally awe-inspiring.
Salamanca is a city made for wandering. Its winding Medieval streets, charming squares, traditional shops, and peaceful gardens create and enchanting atmosphere. Don’t miss the bustling Plaza Mayor, often hailed as the finest square in Spain. It’s the heart of Salamantine life, lined with lively cafés where you can relax, sip a coffee, and watch the world go by.
For a truly unforgettable view, cross the serene River Tormes and admire the Roman bridge with the rose-hued city glowing in the distance – a perfect scene of timeless beauty. Then after a day filled with exploration, unwind with an aperitif in the enchanting Plaza Mayor. Immerse yourself in its lively ambiance as you savour the authentic tastes of traditional tapas at a delightful local eatery – a perfect blend of flavours and atmosphere to the end of the day.

Segovia
Leave Salamanca behind and journey to Segovia, once the capital of the historic Kingdom of Castille.

Stay at Catalonia Gran Via
After breakfast, we bid farewell to Salamanca and set off for Segovia, once the capital of the old Kingdom of Castile and another enchanting Spanish gem. Steeped in Roman history, Segovia proudly showcases one of the most impressive Roman aqueducts in the world. Stretching over half a mile and soaring 100 feet high, this ancient marvel is a testament to engineering genius, constructed entirely without mortar or cement.
Segovia is also steeped in royal heritage, as it was the home of Queen Isabella, who famously supported Christopher Columbus on his voyage to the New World. The city’s Gothic cathedral is adorned with exquisite Renaissance art, but it’s the storybook Alcázar that steals the show. Stood dramatically above the town, this castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside – a must-see for any visitor.
Unlike many tourist hotspots, Segovia retains a genuine charm. Stroll its cobblestone streets, where locals go about their daily routines, shop in the bustling markets, or enjoy the time-honoured tradition of sampling tapas in cozy bars. This seamless blend of historic allure and modern-day life makes Segovia a delightful place to linger.
After exploring, we journey onward to Madrid, where we settle in for a four-night stay at the elegant Catalonia Gran Vía. Located in the heart of the city, this charming hotel, built in 1917, blends early 20th Century architecture with modern comforts. With its prime location on a vibrant street known for upscale shops and striking facades, it’s the perfect base for our time in Spain’s lively capital. One evening meal at a local restaurant is included to further savour the flavours of Madrid.
