East vs West - which will you choose?
Endless skies over the Rockies. Lantern light drifting along the Mekong. Two worlds. Endless opportunities for discovery.
There are journeys that stay with you not because they’re similar – but because they couldn’t be more different. Vast, untamed landscapes that stretch beyond the horizon. Quiet, intricate cultures that reveal themselves slowly, moment by moment.
This is the beauty of travelling far: the chance to experience both – and to understand what makes each one extraordinary in its own way.
Two horizons, we know both by heart
Discovery doesn’t lead in just one direction.
It stretches west.
Where journeys unfold across vast, cinematic landscapes – following the length of Route 66 as it marks its centenary year, or travelling through the USA at a moment of reflection and celebration as it approaches its 250th anniversary. The atmosphere feels heightened, shaped by milestone moments and shared cultural energy, from Independence Day celebrations to the global buzz surrounding North America right now.
After travelling through the USA’s National Parks, Kieran Aldridge, Worldwide Product Manager, reflects:
“The amount of times that I said ‘wow’ when visiting them was unrivalled compared to any other trip that I’ve been on.”
From the Deep South’s music and history to California’s golden coastline, and on to the vast national parks, these are journeys defined by scale and story. Further north, Canada offers something quieter but equally powerful – travelling through the Rockies aboard the Rocky Mountaineer, where wilderness unfolds in comfort, far from the crowds.
Lloyd Morris, Strategic Account Manager, sums up the experience of the Canadian Rockies simply:
“Every twist and turn is mesmerising, with scenery that’s easily some of the best I’ve ever seen.”
And further still, South America brings a different kind of contrast entirely, from the immersive density of the Amazon to the drama of the Andes. Tour Manager Karen Holladay captures it well:
“The spectacular diversity of landscapes... is impossible to truly capture in photos – you have to experience them!”
We have used Riviera Travel before and, as usual, this holiday was excellently organised and run by Riviera and its tour guide Ana, which meant we had our best ever adventure holiday. We highly recommend Riviera Travel and Peru as an adventure holiday destination.
But discovery also stretches east.
Not driven by global spectacle, but by something just as compelling: a growing pull towards deeper, more immersive travel. A sense of discovery shaped by seasonality, culture and lived experience.
For Will Sarson, Product Director, it’s this sense of everyday discovery that stands out most in Japan:
“You can enjoy the kaleidoscope of culture… even the simplest things feel like discovery.”
In Japan, that might mean arriving at exactly the right moment – when autumn foliage transforms temples and gardens into fleeting scenes of colour. Along the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia, it’s the rhythm of life on the river – floating markets, riverside communities, and traditions that feel entirely unfiltered. Across South Korea, India and Sri Lanka, each destination offers its own distinct pace and perspective, layered with history, ritual and meaning.
Different paths. Different rhythms.
Japan itself was incredible, with a perfect mix of culture, history, beautiful scenery and modern cities, but what truly made the trip exceptional was our tour manager, Danijel.
Go West for the epic
Out West, travel is defined by space, scale, and a sense of momentum.
This is a place shaped not just by landscapes, but by moments. A year where Route 66 celebrates 100 years of journeys. Where the United States approaches a milestone anniversary. Where global events bring a renewed energy to the continent. It all adds to the feeling that this is the time to go – to see these places not just as they are, but as they’re being celebrated.
That contrast between cities and wild landscapes was something Daniel Goodman, People Operations Partner, noticed on his California and the Golden West tour:
“While the iconic cities certainly lived up to expectations, what surprised me most was just how powerful the natural landscapes were along the way.”
There’s the freedom of the open road, where each mile tells a different story. The cultural depth of the Deep South, where music, food and history intertwine. The vast, cinematic beauty of national parks, where scale becomes the defining feature of every horizon.
Nowhere is that musical heritage felt more strongly than in the Deep South – something Caroline Day, Tour Manager, sums up perfectly:
“The ultimate musical road trip. Join the Grand Ole Opry family with a concert in Nashville, pay homage to Elvis at Graceland, and listen to the blues in New Orleans. Visit the NASA Space Center and join the cowboys at the Stockyards in Fort Worth. A busy tour, but one that takes in so many unforgettable places.”
What a fantastic trip. Couldn’t fault it. The staff were fantastic. The food was marvellous and the scenery was unbelievable. The drinks were endless.
In Canada, the experience shifts again – less about movement, more about immersion in wilderness. The Rockies rise around you as you travel aboard the Rocky Mountaineer, tracing glacier-fed lakes, forested valleys and mountain passes that feel both remote and refined.
Yvonne Gillot, Worldwide & Cruise Product Manager, describes it like this:
“I loved being on the Rocky Mountaineer train, the varying landscapes you pass through over 2 days is incredible. You start off in the mountains, see snowcapped peaks, move through forests, and pass rivers, desert canyons and finally coastal farmlands as you head closer to Vancouver.”
And then there’s South America – raw, expansive and elemental. The Amazon surrounds you completely, alive with sound and movement, while the Andes offer landscapes that feel almost untouched by time.
Reflecting on her time in Brazil, Karen Holladay adds:
“Standing at the top of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and seeing the city spread out below is breathtaking. Nothing prepares you for the huge perspective from on high - it felt like a spiritual experience.”
This is travel that moves you – in every sense.
Go East for the wonder
Turn east, and the rhythm changes.
Here, travel is guided less by global moments, and more by a growing desire for depth – for experiences shaped by culture, seasonality and atmosphere.
In Japan, that feeling of ease and intrigue sits side by side – something Will Sarson explains well:
“You immediately feel at ease and can enjoy the kaleidoscope of culture - and there is plenty of it.”
In Japan, that’s most visible in autumn, when gardens and temples are framed by vivid reds and golds. But beyond the season, it’s a country defined by precision and care – where every detail, from a quiet shrine to a shared meal, feels intentional.
Further south, Vietnam and Cambodia unfold along the Mekong, where the day begins on the water and unfolds through markets, villages and everyday rituals. It’s immersive, sensory, and constantly shifting – never staged, always real.
Reflecting on time along the Mekong, Pit-Yee Carter, Cruise & Worldwide Product Manager, notes:
“The relaxed pace along the Mekong and the sunsets in particular were beautiful and memorable.”
" What a fabulous trip. We would recommend the journey down the Mekong to travellers who want to experience something different. Wonderful, organised trips that gave us a real feel for Vietnam and Cambodia. Angkor Wat was the highlight, a must see. Our Riviera host Aideen was excellent. The best host we’ve ever had on an organised trip. Highly recommend. A once in-a-lifetime-experience.” - Mark, A Journey on the Mekong, October 2025
Across the region, the richness continues. South Korea brings together ancient palaces and contemporary energy. India’s Golden Triangle reveals layers of history through architecture, colour and scale. Sri Lanka blends wildlife, landscapes and cultural heritage with ease. And in Indonesia, there’s a sense of something emerging – less familiar, more exploratory and full of possibility.
When it comes to India, Yvonne Gillot describes it in unmistakable terms:
“I always describe it as an assault on the senses, it's all about what you see, hear, smell and taste.”
And in Sri Lanka, those moments take on a different quality altogether. Hadher Ali, Sales Team Manager, recalls:
“Standing atop Sigiriya Rock Fortress was unforgettable. As the mist lifted over the jungle below, it felt almost surreal - like stepping back into an ancient kingdom.”
This is travel shaped by curiosity – by the desire to go deeper, and to experience a place as it truly is.
India is an experience for all the senses. For a first-timer like me, the Riviera Travel set-up was excellent. We saw all the tourist sites but also parts of the real, everyday India. The holiday was packed with visits and opportunities to explore.”
Choose your moment
Whether you’re drawn to a journey just ahead or planning further into the future, timing shapes everything.
In the West, this is a year of milestones – moments that bring renewed energy to iconic destinations. In the East, the timing is more natural but no less powerful – autumn colours, dry-season clarity, and the subtle shifts that define each destination at its best.
Some experiences are about being part of something happening now.
Others are about choosing the perfect moment to arrive.
Both are worth it.
Go with those who know the way
Because when you’re travelling this far, how you experience a place matters just as much as where you go.
That sense of ease is exactly what Lee Cross, Social Media Lead, experienced on his trip to Japan:
“Having the itinerary, transfers and hotels all taken care of meant I could fully immerse myself in the destinations and spend more time truly taking everything in, rather than worrying about logistics.”
It’s understanding when a destination is at its most meaningful – whether that’s standing on Route 66 during its centenary year, or arriving in Japan just as the leaves begin to turn. Knowing where to pause along the Mekong, or how to experience the Rockies in a way that feels effortless and immersive.
It’s the difference between simply visiting – and truly connecting.
Discovery has two horizons.
We know both by heart.
