Tempted by a holiday to Italy, perhaps to visit the Amalfi Coast? You can step back in time at Pompeii, stroll around Sorrento, take a boat trip to Capri across the Bay of Naples, and follow the Path of the Gods. It’s an unforgettable destination – a coastline that’s serene, seductive, and beautifully unspoilt.

The heavenly Amalfi coastline with its incredible natural splendour is a joy to explore on our Walk & Discover: Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast & Pompeii and Pompeii, Capri & the Bay of Naples escorted tours. Marvel at Pompeii, be inspired in Capri, and relax on a stroll around tranquil Ravello.

Why Visit The Amalfi Coast?

The dazzling Amalfi coast is a glorious stretch of land that has lured visitors for decades. Located a scenic 90-minute drive south of Naples, the Amalfi coast is steeped in culture and history. The Greeks and Romans certainly left their mark and escorted tours of Pompeii and Herculaneum are truly magnificent.

The scenery is outstanding too, with vibrant, colourful villages seemingly clinging to the cliffs. Glamorous towns and villages such as Positano and Ravello look like movie backdrops – in fact, Positano has been the backdrop to films such as Goodbye Mr Chips and Under the Tuscan Sun. It’s little wonder that the Amalfi Coast is the playground for the rich and famous.

Visit Sorrento, a pretty seaside resort, and you can wander from a pavement café to a geranium-clad trattoria, then onto an excellent seafood restaurant. The local cuisine is first-class and be sure to try a glass of limoncello – lemons and bottles of the liqueur make for vivid displays of yellow on nearly every market stall in town.

Then, of course, there is the coastline itself. It’s simply breathtaking and understandably world-renowned – UNESCO rates it as ‘an area of great physical beauty and natural diversity’. If you wish to experience a glimpse of heaven and gaze at spectacular panoramas, walk the dramatic Path of the Gods on our Walk & Discover tour.

Highlights Of The Amalfi Coast

While staying in Sorrento, take the opportunity to visit one of the world’s most important ancient archaeological sites. Once a thriving Roman city, Pompeii was completely buried under a thick carpet of volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 CE. Walk around the astonishingly preserved streets, temples, baths, and amphitheatre today, and it’s astounding to think Pompeii remained undiscovered for over 1,600 years.

The nearby town of Herculaneum succumbed to the same fate and is another remarkable historical site to explore. Less visited than its more well-known neighbour, the ruins have remarkably preserved frescoes and mosaics, as well as intact Roman skeletons.

A Capri tour is memorable too, and it’s easy to take a short boat ride across the Bay of Naples to discover the island’s charms. Capri has inspired writers, artists, aristocrats, seduced Hollywood stars, and continues to enchant travellers. Walk around the stylish main town, which is perched on a hill overlooking the quaint harbour. In your free time, it’s worth heading to the famous Blue Grotto, a large sea cave that floods with incandescent blue light.

Ravello is also a must-see, an exclusive resort much-loved for its coastal views, medieval streets, and garden villas. It’s a tranquil town to wander around, and if you’re on our Walk & Discover tour, you’ll have free time to explore before you start on either an easy or moderate walk along the delightful Path of Lemons through the authentic heart of the Amalfi coast. No prizes for guessing what grows in the orchards you pass through.

If visiting the Amalfi Coast as part of our Pompeii, Capri and the Bay of Naples escorted tour, a walking tour around the old town of Naples is included. The city’s UNESCO-listed historic centre is recognised for its wealth of monuments – and delicious pizzas.

Walking The Path Of The Gods In Amalfi

For more active travellers, a highlight of our Walk & Discover: Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii escorted tour is a walk along the Path of the Gods. Known locally as Il Sentiero degli Dei, the impressive clifftop pathway certainly lives up to its name, offering heavenly views of the towns scattered below on the Amalfi coastline, as well as the stunning Mediterranean Sea.

Surrounded by natural beauty and abundant birdlife, walkers on our walks enjoy an experience that’s out of this world while on either a three- or four-and-a-half-hour route – there’s an easy and moderate option. The terrain is rocky at times, but those following the contours of the low slopes of Monte Tre Calli are rewarded as they pass through pine woods and scented lemon groves. The Path of the Gods is an adventurous trail yet genuinely idyllic.
