Vienna, Austria

If you’re thinking about striking out to explore the heart of Europe, a great place to start is the Austrian capital Vienna, which lies on the river Danube. Home to three of the world’s greatest composers – Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss – Vienna is heralded as the capital of classical music and you can enjoy one of the many classical music performances which the city hosts on a regular basis. Today, Vienna is considered one of the best European cities for solo travel. A stroll along its pristine streets lined with fine examples of ornamental architecture is a relaxing highlight for any visitor.

There’s so much in Vienna for solo travellers. Don’t miss a trip to Schönbrunn, the beautiful Baroque palace where a six-year-old Mozart played for royalty. Bookworms should also head for the Austrian National Library – it houses over 12.2 million books and artefacts.

Berlin, Germany

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, so 2019 could be a poignant time to visit the German capital. As a destination for singles holidays, Berlin is surprisingly welcoming, with locals being polite and accommodating. Top of the agenda for solo travellers in Berlin should be a visit to the iconic Brandenburg Gate – crowds also gather to see the monument lit up at night so you’ll feel safe wandering the streets at twilight.

Throughout November, special events will be taking place in the city to commemorate the fall of the Wall, however visitors can see remains of the guarded concrete barrier at any time – the longest surviving stretch is now known as the East Side Gallery, displaying work by over 100 artists.

Seville, Spain

Seductive Seville is often on the itinerary for singles holidays in Classical Spain and it’s easy to see why. Seville is charming, compact and safe to walk around, making it one of the best European cities for solo travel. The imposing cathedral, with its monument dedicated to the explorer Christopher Columbus, is a must-see attraction, as is the Plaza de España and fortified palace of Alcázar – if you experience a feeling of déjà vu, scenes from Star WarsLawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones were filmed here.

Centuries-old Spanish traditions have also been kept alive in Seville, giving the city a distinctive Andalucían air. If you want to see a flamenco show, learn more about matadors or eat tapas and drink sherry, it’s the place to go.

Arrive in Bruges and you’ll discover one of the prettiest preserved medieval towns in Europe, where you can unwind, explore at a leisurely pace and indulge in your love for Flemish art — and delicious chocolate.

As a solo traveller in Bruges, you’ll soon notice the city’s old-world charm and the friendliness of its citizens. Whether you’re enjoying a glass of the famous Belgian beer – over 500 varieties are brewed in the country – or a plate of speciality mussels, someone is sure to say hello.

Vilnius, Lithuania

Vibrant Vilnius is also one of the best cities for solo travel in Europe. The Lithuanian capital has seen more than its fair share of wars, invasions and fires, but today it’s a friendly destination to explore, and ideal for singles holidays. In the Old Town, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, church steeples dominate the skyline and Gothic buildings sit alongside exquisite examples of neo-Classical and Baroque architecture.

Join fellow travellers on a solo holiday in the Baltics for a stroll around the city’s many green spaces – pack a picnic of a traditional kibinai pastry. Or head to the main Cathedral Square and look for the ‘stebuklas’ miracle tile. Stand on it, spin clockwise and make a wish. Then keep your fingers crossed it’ll come true.
