Best of Indonesia: Temples, Volcanoes & Islands

Arrive in Jakarta and transfer to our hotel in one of the city’s characterful central neighbourhoods. Indonesia’s capital is a city of contrasts, balancing fast-paced modern life with quieter residential districts and leafy parks.  

The rest of the day is yours to settle in and perhaps stretch your legs on a stroll through the local area, where independent cafés serve coffees sourced from islands across the Indonesian archipelago, each with its own distinct flavour and story.

This morning we set out to explore Jakarta in earnest – a city of striking contrasts, where gleaming office towers rise above historic districts shaped by centuries of trade, migration and empire. Our guided tour takes us from the vast Istiqlal Mosque to the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, symbols of the religious diversity that has long defined Indonesia.

We continue to the fascinating National Museum, where artefacts, artworks and treasures tell the story of an archipelago home to hundreds of languages, cultures and traditions. In Jakarta’s old colonial quarter, once known as Batavia, traces of Dutch rule remain in elegant buildings, canals and bustling squares that hint at the city’s role in the global spice trade. We also visit the Wayang Museum, dedicated to Indonesia’s celebrated puppetry tradition, before enjoying lunch in one of the area’s grandest heritage buildings. 

Later, we board the train to Yogyakarta, one of the most rewarding rail journeys in Indonesia. As Jakarta’s skyline fades behind us, rice paddies, swaying palms, and volcanic peaks take its place. Travelling across the island from west to central Java offers a fascinating glimpse into everyday life, with ever-changing landscapes unfolding beyond the window. On arrival in Yogyakarta, we check into our hotel and enjoy an evening at leisure.

After breakfast, we visit one of Indonesia’s greatest cultural treasures – Borobudur. Rising from the lush plains of central Java, the UNESCO-listed monument is the world’s largest Buddhist temple, built over a thousand years ago from millions of blocks of volcanic stone. As we ascend its terraces, intricate carvings unfold like a vast storybook, illustrating Buddhist teachings and everyday moments. 

Later, we discover another Indonesian tradition with a hands-on introduction to batik, the intricate textile art for which the country is renowned. Guided by local artisans, we’ll learn how hot wax and dye are used to create the elaborate patterns seen on everything from everyday clothing to ceremonial garments. It’s a craft that demands patience and precision – and trying it for ourselves offers a newfound appreciation for the skills behind every piece.

After some time at leisure back at the hotel, we venture out once more to experience Yogyakarta after dark. This evening’s food tour reveals a different side of the city, as we stroll through lively streets lined with market stalls, food carts and open-air eateries. Along the way, we’ll sample a variety of local specialities, from familiar favourites to more adventurous dishes for the curious. Travelling by traditional bajaj through bustling neighbourhoods, we’ll see how locals spend their evenings and soak up the atmosphere of one of Java’s most vibrant cities. The evening concludes with a meal at a local restaurant before we return to our hotel. 

This morning, we visit the Keraton, Yogyakarta’s royal palace and the ceremonial heart of the city. Home to the Sultan of Yogyakarta, the palace remains a living centre of Javanese culture, where centuries-old traditions continue to shape daily life. As we explore its courtyard and pavilions, we’ll gain insight into the history of the former Javanese kingdom before watching young performers rehearse a traditional court dance, preserving an art form passed down through generations.

We then continue to Prambanan, Indonesia’s largest Hindu temple complex and one of Southeast Asia’s most impressive archaeological sites. Built in the 9th century, the soaring stone towers are dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma, while elaborate carvings depict scenes from the ancient Ramayana epic. Set against the fertile plains of central Java, with volcanic peaks often visible on the horizon, Prambanan is remarkable for its setting as well as its architecture. As we wander among the temples and the remains of structures toppled by centuries of earthquakes, we’ll discover a site that reflects the cultural exchanges, faith and artistic achievement that have shaped Indonesia over the centuries.

This evening, we venture out to enjoy a traditional Indonesian dance performance with dinner included. 

Today, we journey east across Java towards the dramatic landscapes of Mount Bromo. As rice paddies, coconut groves and volcanic peaks drift past the window, the route offers a glimpse of everyday life in rural Indonesia. Gradually, the roads begin to climb into the highlands, the air grows cooler and sweeping views open up across forested hills and distant mountains. Arriving in the Bromo region, we’ll settle into our hotel amidst the lush scenery, with time to relax and enjoy the remarkable setting before tomorrow’s adventures.

Our day starts before dawn this morning, as we set out by jeep into the extraordinary landscapes of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Crossing the vast volcanic plain beneath a star-filled sky, we make our way to a viewpoint overlooking one of Indonesia’s most iconic scenes. As the sun rises, the volcanic landscape slowly comes to life, revealing a dramatic panorama of ancient craters, drifting mist and rugged peaks. The setting feels almost otherworldly, with Mount Bromo and its neighbouring volcanoes rising from the enormous caldera below.

Those who wish can continue to Mount Bromo itself for a short walk to the crater rim, offering the opportunity to peer into the volcano and experience the remarkable natural wonder at close quarters. The surrounding landscape bears the marks of the powerful geological forces that continue to shape Java, creating an environment unlike anywhere else on the island. 

Returning to the hotel, we enjoy breakfast and time to relax before leaving the highlands behind. Later, we drive to Surabaya, Java’s second-largest city, where we spend the night ahead of tomorrow’s flight.

This morning is at leisure before we fly east to Flores, the gateway to Komodo National Park and one of Indonesia’s most captivating islands. On arrival in Labuan Bajo, we’ll transfer to our beachside resort, our home for the next three nights. Although still part of the same vast archipelago, Flores feels worlds away from Java. The bustling cities, grand temples and royal heritage of the west give way to a slower pace of life, where palm-fringed hills roll down to turquoise waters and fishing boats bob in quiet harbours.

The differences are striking and offer a fascinating reminder of Indonesia’s extraordinary diversity. Languages, traditions, and landscapes vary dramatically from island to island, and nowhere is that more apparent than here. As we make our short journey to the hotel, you’ll notice quieter roads, greener scenery and a more laid-back atmosphere, setting the tone for the next stage of our adventure. The remainder of the day is free to relax and enjoy the resort’s surroundings as we prepare to explore Komodo National Park. 

Today, we discover Flores through its food with a hands-on cooking experience showcasing the island’s distinctive flavours and ingredients. Guided by a local chef, we’ll learn how produce grown on Flores shapes its cuisine and prepare a selection of traditional dishes using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Afterwards, we’ll sit down to enjoy the meal we’ve created, surrounded by gardens where many of the herbs, fruits and vegetables are grown.

Later, we venture into the hills above Labuan Bajo, where sweeping views stretch across the sea towards the many islands scattered beyond the coastline. Here, we’ll be welcomed by local villagers who share the stories, customs and tribal heritage that have shaped life on Flores for generations. Inside a traditional-style house, we’ll learn about ceremonial dress, community life and the island’s rich cultural history before enjoying a performance of traditional music and dance - join in to experience it all for yourself. 

Afterwards, we return to our hotel and enjoy a free evening at leisure. 

Today, we venture into the island-dotted waters of Komodo National Park, a UNESCO-listed wilderness of rugged islands, turquoise bays and remarkable wildlife.

Travelling by private boat through this scattered archipelago, our first stop is Padar Island, where those who wish can climb to a viewpoint overlooking a maze of crescent-shaped beaches, dramatic headlands and sparkling seas. It’s one of Indonesia’s most celebrated views, offering a wonderful perspective on the park's scale and natural beauty.

We continue to the famous Pink Beach, where fragments of red coral mingle with white sand, creating its distinctive rosy hue. Surrounded by crystal-clear water, there’s time to relax, take a swim or simply soak up the scenery before enjoying lunch overlooking the coast.

Later, we arrive on Komodo Island itself in search of the world’s largest lizard – the legendary Komodo dragon. Accompanied by local rangers, we’ll explore the island’s dry savannah and woodland habitats, keeping watch for these remarkable reptiles as well as the deer and other wildlife that share their domain. Seeing a Komodo dragon in its natural environment is an unforgettable experience, offering a rare glimpse of a creature that feels as though it belongs to another age.

The final stop is a coral-rich marine haven where there is time to swim or snorkel amongst vibrant reefs teeming with life. Keep an eye out for graceful manta rays, sea turtles and a kaleidoscope of tropical fish beneath the surface. After a day spent exploring one of Indonesia’s natural treasures, we return to Labuan Bajo and our hotel for a free evening.

Today, we leave Flores behind and fly to Bali, Indonesia’s most celebrated island. On arrival, we transfer to Ubud, a town surrounded by emerald rice terraces, tropical forests and river valleys. While Flores is defined by rugged volcanic landscapes, remote islands and a distinctly untamed beauty, Bali presents a different side of Indonesia – green, gentler and shaped by centuries of agriculture, artistry and spiritual tradition.

The contrast is striking. As we travel through the Balinese countryside, neatly sculpted rice fields cascade down hillsides, temples sit quietly amongst the trees, and village life unfolds at an unhurried pace. Ubud, long regarded as Bali’s cultural heart, is the ideal place to experience this atmosphere, blending natural beauty with a rich artistic heritage.

After checking into our hotel, the remainder of the day is free to relax and settle into our new surroundings. Perhaps enjoy the hotel's facilities, take a stroll through the local area, or simply soak up the tranquillity of this enchanting corner of Bali.  

This morning, we set out to explore a different side of Bali, far removed from the beach clubs and social media snapshots. Our first stop is Goa Gajah, the mysterious ‘Elephant Cave’, a centuries-old sanctuary carved into the rock and surrounded by jungle-cloaked ruins, bathing pools and places of worship that remain active today. As we wander through the complex, we’ll discover a site that has drawn pilgrims and spiritual seekers for more than a thousand years, where offerings still appear beside ancient statues and shrines. 

We then continue to Tirta Empul, one of Bali’s most revered water temples. Built around a sacred spring, the temple is a place of pilgrimage for Balinese Hindus, who come here to take part in a cleansing ritual beneath a series of stone foundations. During our guided visit, we’ll learn about the island’s deeply rooted spiritual traditions while admiring the temple’s intricately carved courtyards and tranquil surroundings. There is also free time to explore independently or, for those who wish, take the opportunity to slip into the spring waters and enjoy a hands-on experience of this serene water temple.

Before returning to Ubud, we pause at the Tegallalang Rice Terraces, where vibrant green fields cascade down the hillside in elegant caves. These iconic landscapes, shaped by generations of farmers, offer a glimpse into the agricultural traditions that continue to define much of rural Bali and provide one of the island’s most recognisable views.

The remainder of the day is free to enjoy Ubud at your own pace. Perhaps settle into a café overlooking the rice fields, browse local galleries and boutiques, visit the Monkey Forest or explore the Royal Palace in the heart of town.

This morning, we journey into Bali’s cooler central highlands to visit Ulun Danu Beratan, one of the island’s most photographed temples. Set on the shores of Lake Beratan and seemingly floating on the water, this elegant sanctuary is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of lakes and rivers. Surrounded by mist-shrouded mountains and fresh mountain air, the setting feels wonderfully different from the tropical landscapes of southern Bali and offers a glimpse into another side of the island.

We then continue to the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, a vast patchwork of emerald-green fields that stretch across the hillside beneath the slopes of Mount Batukaru. Accompanied by our guide, we’ll take a gentle walk through the terraces and learn about the centuries-old farming practices that continue to shape life here. Along the way, we’ll gain an insight into the intricate irrigation systems, growing cycles and daily routines that have sustained Balinese communities for generations.

Later, we enjoy a fascinating introduction to everyday life in Bali with a visit to a traditional family compound. Here, we’ll learn about local customs, architecture and spiritual traditions, including the colourful offerings that play such an important role in daily life. We’ll also discover the Balinese alphabet and receive a unique keepsake featuring our name written on a traditional palm leaf. After a typical Balinese lunch, we continue to the coastal town of Sanur, where a beachfront resort awaits. With its palm-lined promenade, relaxed atmosphere and calm shoreline, Sanur provides the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy our final days in Bali.

Today is free to enjoy Bali at your own pace. Perhaps spend the day unwinding by the pool, strolling along Sanur’s beachfront promenade or settling into one of the many cafés and restaurants dotted along the coast. With calm waters, swaying palms and a relaxed atmosphere, Sanur is an ideal place to slow down and savour the final days of our Indonesian adventure.
