Signature Tour: Southern India's Coastal Route: Tamil Nadu to Kerala

This morning, dive into the rich history and vibrant energy of Chennai, a city where tradition and modernity collide. Our journey begins along the bustling streets, where grand Victorian-era architecture stands as a reminder of the city’s colonial past. We’ll pass the lively fish market, where the air is thick with the scent of the sea and multi-hued wooden fishing boats rest on the sands of Marina Beach, the longest urban beach in India. 

Our destination is the heart of colonial Madras — Fort St. George, a stronghold that played a pivotal role in British India. Established as the first British outpost in the country, it served as both a military base and the long-time residence of Clive of India. We’ll step inside to explore the fort’s storied past and visit St. Mary’s Church, a historic landmark that proudly claims to be the first Anglican church east of the Suez, dating back to 1680. 

The afternoon is yours to unwind—whether you choose to relax at the hotel or continue exploring Chennai’s vibrant streets at your own pace. As evening falls, prepare for a culinary experience to remember at a renowned local restaurant. Here, some of Chennai’s most celebrated chefs craft signature dishes with meticulous care; curries slow-simmered to perfection, marinated grills bursting with flavour, fragrant biryanis layered with delicate precision, and handmade breads served warm from the tandoor. This is authentic South Indian cuisine at its finest, a feast for both the palate and the senses. 

This morning, we journey to Mahabalipuram, an ancient port city that once thrived as a key trading hub with Rome. Steeped in history and legend, this coastal gem is home to some of India’s most extraordinary rock-cut architecture.

Here, we’ll explore the awe-inspiring 7th-century temples, remarkable UNESCO World Heritage sites where intricate carvings emerge from massive granite monoliths. These magnificent structures, shaped by time and craftsmanship, offer a glimpse into the artistic brilliance of the Pallava dynasty.

After soaking in the breathtaking history and scenery, we’ll savour a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, where the flavours of South India come to life in fragrant spices, fresh seafood, and traditional delicacies. 

In the afternoon, we journey south to Pondicherry, a coastal town where French colonial charm mingles with traditional Indian culture. The transition from the vibrant hustle of Chennai to the more serene, laid-back atmosphere of Pondicherry is marked by scenic landscapes and tranquil seaside views. Upon arrival, we’ll settle into our hotel, where an exquisite dinner awaits, offering a delightful introduction to the region’s rich culinary heritage. Prepare for an evening of flavours that perfectly blend French finesse with Tamil influences, showcasing fresh, locally-sourced ingredients prepared with both precision and creativity. 

Begin your day with a leisurely stroll through the charming French colonial quarter of Pondicherry (officially Puducherry), affectionately known as ‘Pondy.’ This area offers a striking contrast to the bustling energy of typical Indian towns, exuding a calm, almost Mediterranean atmosphere.

The streets are lined with mustard-yellow neo-classical villas, their walls draped in vibrant bougainvillea, adding to the town’s picturesque allure. We’ll admire the Governor’s residence, a stunning remnant of Pondicherry’s French heritage, and visit the site of the old French fort, carefully designed by the renowned military architect Vauban. With its quaint squares and even a Hotel de Ville (town hall), this area feels as though it’s been transported from the south of France, yet is undeniably infused with Indian warmth and spirit. 

We set off southward toward Tanjore, where we’ll settle in for a two-night stay at the welcoming Ideal River View Hotel, a charming three-star superior property. Nestled along the river, this peaceful retreat offers a perfect mix of comfort and serenity, with breakfast included each morning. After our arrival, the afternoon is yours to relax and unwind in the tranquil ambiance, perhaps lounging by the palm-shaded pool. A delicious lunch is also provided today, offering a taste of local flavours. 

Tanjore, once the heart of the mighty Chola Empire, is renowned for its architectural jewel: the Brihadeeswara Temple. Standing at over 200 feet tall, the temple’s towering structure is adorned with an intricately carved ochre-coloured façade that catches the first light of day, casting a warm, golden glow.

For more than a millennium, it has served as a vibrant place of worship, encircled by grand colonnaded halls and a protective fortified wall. The temple's majestic presence is a lasting testament to the power and wealth of the Chola dynasty, and as the sun dips below the horizon, the structure takes on a mesmerizing red hue. Tanjore is also celebrated for its fine metalwork, with the nearby Royal Palace's art gallery offering a captivating collection of bronze sculptures, further showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage. 

Our journey takes us to the charming Chettinad region, a hidden gem that promises to captivate your senses. Steeped in authenticity, this area offers a glimpse into rural India, where small farming communities thrive in harmony with the land. As we explore this lesser-known corner of the country, you’ll discover the true heart of the countryside, far from the usual tourist trail. This evening, indulge in a delectable dinner, where you’ll savour the distinctive flavours of Chettinad cuisine, served in the traditional way on a banana leaf, a culinary experience like no other. 

After breakfast, we embark on a journey through the lesser-known Chettinad region, where the allure of its grand mansions and local traditions awaits. We’ll visit some of the region's most impressive homes, step inside the local Maharaja’s palace, and explore the craftsmanship of artisans still creating intricate pieces by hand. A visit to a tile workshop is a true highlight, where each tile is carefully crafted and painted with precision. We’ll also witness the art of sari weaving, with vibrant textiles being created on traditional wooden looms, preserving ancient designs passed down through generations. 

In the afternoon, we make our way to Madurai, one of southern India’s most iconic destinations, home to the majestic Meenakshi Amman Temple. This stunning monument is often compared to the Taj Mahal for its grandeur, consisting of sprawling courtyards, towering pillared halls, and a sacred lake. Twelve towering gateways, adorned with thousands of colourful stucco carvings, create a vivid spectacle that reflects the temple’s rich cultural significance. Madurai, once a thriving city long before Chennai was founded, has been a centre of trade and spirituality, especially in the spice trade with the Romans. It’s often referred to as the spiritual and cultural heart of Tamil Nadu. 

As dusk falls, we’ll hop into tuk-tuks for an unforgettable evening exploration of the temple, taking in the sights and sounds of the vibrant traditional markets, where stalls overflow with goods and tailors hum away on their vintage Singer sewing machines, adding to the lively atmosphere of this ancient city. 

This morning, we return to the Meenakshi Amman Temple to experience its grandeur in the soft light of day. Following this, we explore the nearby Nayak Palace, home to a magnificent throne room and a vast ceremonial courtyard, offering a glimpse into the regal past of Madurai. 

Afterward, we journey westward, our path leading us toward the distant Western Ghats, the towering mountain range that forms the natural boundary between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. As we wind through the terrain, the road snakes through dense forests, revealing fleeting views of lush, green valleys below. Crossing into Kerala, we arrive in the charming town of Kumily, nestled among fragrant spice plantations and on the doorstep of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, where the natural beauty of the area is as captivating as the wildlife that thrives within its protected borders. 

As the tropical dawn breaks, we rise early to the symphony of birdsong and venture into the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary for a guided nature walk. The lush landscape of towering teak, bamboo, wild fig, and vibrant jacaranda trees surrounds us as we explore this verdant paradise.

While the elusive tigers that call this reserve home are rarely seen, the birdlife here is exceptional. With over 260 species recorded, the sanctuary is a haven for birdwatchers, offering sightings of hornbills, parakeets, kingfishers, eagles, kites, and flycatchers. If you’re lucky, you might also spot the charming Malabar giant squirrel or the playful lion-tailed macaque amidst the dense foliage. 

After a day of exploration, return to the hotel where you’ll be greeted with light refreshments and an enriching talk from a local naturalist. Our expert will share insights into how the sanctuary protects its wildlife from poaching, its efforts to safeguard endangered species, and the unique flora and fauna that thrive here. In the afternoon, you’ll have time to unwind before visiting one of the local spice plantations, where our guide will introduce you to the aromatic world of pepper, cloves, curry leaves, cardamom, vanilla, turmeric, nutmeg, cinnamon, and many other spices. Learn about their culinary and medicinal uses and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of Kerala’s spice trade. 

This morning, we bid farewell to the misty hills of Periyar and begin our descent towards the Kerala coast, passing through the lush, carpet-like tea plantations that stretch across the landscape. Our journey takes us to the heart of Kerala's enchanting backwaters, where we'll spend the night aboard a traditional Kerala houseboat.

Setting sail from the charming town of Alleppey, these spacious boats are home to six to eight guests, with a crew of three dedicated to providing an authentic experience. As we glide through the tranquil waterways, we’re treated to a delicious Keralan feast, with lunch and dinner served on board, showcasing the region’s rich culinary traditions.

The journey is a window into the daily life of Kerala, offering glimpses of paddy fields, coconut palms, and brightly painted local houses. Along the way, watch for the vibrant birdlife that calls these waters home, children returning from school by foot or rowing their small boats, and villagers washing clothes, pots, and even themselves in the narrow channels. It’s a serene and captivating way to explore this beautiful and unhurried corner of India.

As the first light of dawn breaks over the tranquil backwaters, we wake to the serene symphony of nature — birds calling, water gently rippling — before enjoying a peaceful breakfast aboard our houseboat. Afterward, we leave the boat behind and drive to the charming village of Kumarakom.

The remainder of the day is yours to unwind and explore at your own pace. As the sun begins to set, we embark on a sunset boat cruise across the vast expanse of Lake Vembanad. This sprawling body of water, one of India's largest lakes and an important wetland ecosystem, is home to a vibrant mix of birdlife, animals, and lush flora. It’s the perfect way to end the day, surrounded by the gentle hum of nature as the sky and water shimmer in the golden hues of twilight. 

Our day begins in the serene wetlands of Kumarakom, a sanctuary teeming with an impressive variety of birdlife and lush vegetation. We’ll take a rickshaw ride to a nearby jetty where a boat awaits, ready to set off on a peaceful cruise through the waters. Accompanied by an expert naturalist, we’ll spot a rich array of birds—from majestic herons and owls to graceful cormorants and egrets—as they thrive in the surrounding waters and rice paddies. As we drift through this tranquil landscape, we’ll also get a glimpse of local life, watching the everyday activities of the people who live in harmony with the river. After our boat excursion, the rest of the day is yours to relax and immerse yourself in the natural beauty and calm of this remarkable area. 

This morning, we head out for a short drive to Cochin, the historic gem of the Malabar Coast and once the bustling hub for India’s prized spices bound for Europe. The heart of the city lies in Fort Cochin, an enchanting labyrinth of narrow streets lined with grand merchant houses, each steeped in centuries of history. Just a stone's throw away, the vibrant Mattancherry district offers a glimpse into the city’s rich past, with the splendid Dutch Palace and India's oldest synagogue standing as testaments to the multicultural heritage. No visit to Cochin would be complete without seeing the iconic Chinese fishing nets, towering, cantilevered structures that continue to function as they have for centuries, casting their nets into the waters with timeless precision.
