A New Season Sets Sail

With the first sails of the 2026 European river cruise season already underway, we’ve  officially opened the year with our annual River Cruise Kick Off – a much anticipated moment in the calendar, and one that sets the tone for the season ahead.
Held in Amsterdam from 3–6 March on board the MS Geoffrey Chaucer, the event brought together Riviera Travel colleagues, long standing partners at Scylla, Cruise Directors and Cruise Hosts from across the rivers of Europe. More than a meeting, it was a chance to reconnect, share ideas and fine tune the details that shape every journey.
The River Cruise Kick Off is where planning meets perspective. It’s a space to reflect on what our guests value most, introduce thoughtful enhancements, and ensure each river cruise feels as carefully considered as the last – if not more so.
As Riviera’s 2026 season begins with five day discovery cruises in Paris and Budapest, alongside the first Douro sailings of the year, the focus remains the same: effortless travel, enriching experiences, and a warm, sociable atmosphere on board.

What’s new on board for 2026

This season introduces a series of enhancements designed to elevate life on board – from dining to daily moments that bring guests together.

Dining and indulgence

Meals remain a highlight of Riviera river cruising, with new touches introduced across the fleet:
•    Steak is now available daily – a firm favourite, here to stay
•    Expanded vegan and vegetarian options, including thoughtful details such as dairy free soups
•    Regional flavours woven throughout menus, with local dishes appearing across different courses
•    An enhanced afternoon tea experience, complete with a chocolate fountain – this is what you call fine dining!
•    Cook to order breakfast specials, including waffles, pancakes and French toast, prepared fresh each morning

The all inclusive drinks package continues to be a cornerstone of the Riviera experience, available from 4pm on embarkation and disembarkation days, and from 10am to midnight on all other days. Alongside wines, beers and soft drinks, guests can enjoy Riviera’s signature cocktail, mocktails and an expanded drinks selection.

Life on board

Beyond dining, 2026 brings more opportunities to relax and connect. Ice cream socials return, alongside additional informal activities designed to create a naturally sociable atmosphere. A daily news update is now available for both UK and North American guests, helping everyone stay connected while travelling.

Meet the Cruise Hosts

A key highlight for 2026 is our dedicated Cruise Hosts, working alongside your Cruise Director to enhance the onboard atmosphere and guest experience.

Friendly and attentive, our Cruise Hosts help create those small but meaningful moments that make all the difference. Whether it’s bringing guests together or simply ensuring everyone feels at ease, they play an important role in the rhythm of life on board.

They’ll be hosting a range of light activities and social moments, including:

  • Quizzes, dancing lessons, games and informal group activities
  • Photo masterclass – where our hosts provide a phone photography workshop so you can capture all your memories, perfectly!
  • Gentle wellbeing sessions such as gentle stretching and chair yoga classes
  • Opportunities to connect, socialise and relax in a welcoming environment

It’s all part of our commitment to creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere where every guest feels looked after from the moment they step on board.

Paula Alenxandra - Cruise Host

"This is my second season, and what I’m most looking forward to is giving our guests the chance to truly relax and feel cared for — whether that’s through tai chi, yoga, or simply taking time for their wellbeing.

I love bringing people together through routines and dance sessions, creating moments of fun and connection that become lasting memories.

It’s a real privilege to be chosen by our guests – and I’m so grateful to be part of their journey, helping create memories they’ll take home with them."

Gary James - Cruise Host

"This is my first year as a Cruise Host with Riviera Travel, however I’m now in my 14th cruising season. I’ll be based on the Danube, including some 14-day cruises, which I’m really excited about.

My role is all about keeping guests engaged, both onshore and on board — from morning fitness sessions and quizzes to hosting and presenting evening entertainment, as well as welcoming special guest speakers on board."

A season to look forward to

With the first cruises of 2026 already underway, anticipation is building for the months ahead. From Europe’s most storied rivers to carefully curated itineraries, Riviera river cruises continue to be shaped by detail, generosity and a love of travel shared with like minded people.
The season has begun – and it’s one worth looking forward to.
