Italy has it all, from world-class art and architecture to stunning scenery, not to mention some of the world’s finest food and wine.

It’s ideal for the single traveller, especially if it’s your first time seeing the world on your own. Tuscany is perhaps best known for its rolling hills, stately cypress trees and isolated farmhouses.  But the region is also blessed with some of the most stunning towns and cities in the country; Florence, Siena and Arezzo to name just three.

You’ll be able to enjoy all of them before we head to the eternal city of Rome. Nowhere else can quite compare with Rome’s rich history, and so much of it is still visible and tangible as you walk around the city with other solo travellers. You will have the opportunity to visit some of the iconic sites that make this one of the most exciting cities in the world.

Later today we journey past classic, scenic Tuscan landscapes to Arezzo for our evening meal and a chance to share stories of today’s visit with like-minded people also travelling alone.

Florence is a city on many people’s ‘must-visit’ list due to its fairy-tale, riverside location, monumental art collections and typical Italian buzz.  We’ll enjoy a guided tour of the important sights of the city before our timed entry into the incomparable Uffizi Gallery.  Containing works by the likes of Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Raphael and numerous other artists, it houses one of the best art collections the world has to offer.  Away from the gallery are wonderful markets and shops to discover, interspersed with an essential coffee at a pavement café.

Stay at Golden Tulip Piram

Today we leave Tuscany after breakfast driving firstly to Assisi, where we enjoy a guided tour. This delightful medieval town, with its flower-hung streets, lovely views over the Umbrian countryside and fountain-splashed piazzas is famous for a single event – the birth of Francis, the most revered saint in Italy. The man himself was one of the most extraordinary figures the Italian church has ever produced. He had a privileged upbringing, leading a very un-Christian lifestyle, but whilst imprisoned, God appeared to him. After release, he renounced his inheritance, living the life of a beggar, and mixed with lepers, but ultimately found his vocation founding the order of monks which bears his name, the Franciscans. Two years after his death, the basilica was built, financed by donations from all over Europe creating one of the most beautiful shrines in the Christian world adorned by arguably its greatest art collection outside an actual gallery. The building today is actually two churches, one on top of the other with St Francis himself lying under the floor in the crypt. The mood inside is most respectful, being in tune with Franciscan principles – silence being the rule, quite plain around the tomb itself and accompanied by brown-robed monks.

We have ample time to visit the basilica together with the town, arriving in Rome early evening. Our hotel in Rome is the four-star Golden Tulip Piram.

Rome

One of the most captivating cities in the world, Rome is the perfect blend of ancient history and modern times.

Guided tour of Rome
Free afternoon in Rome

One of the most captivating cities in the world, Rome is the perfect blend of ancient history and modern times. This morning, we enjoy a guided tour of the city, where we will take in many of the best-known sights, such as the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain' and so much more. The beautiful Eternal City owes its majesty to the Roman Empire that commanded much of the world for nigh on 500 years, and also to the Papacy, which for much of its existence, held great political as well as religious influence.

Free afternoon in Rome

This afternoon, you are free to explore as you wish, be it on your own or with new-found friends.  May we suggest a visit to the Vatican Museum?  Or enjoy a wander through the maze of streets and welcoming piazzas.

Day
7

Villa d'Este & Frascati

Immerse yourself further in the Eternal City with visits to Villa d'Este and a Frascati vineyard.

Colosseum in Rome lit by morning sunlight, Italy
Visit to Villa d'Este
Wine tasting in Frascati region

This morning, we visit the historic town of Tivoli, just outside of Rome, to visit the palace of Villa d’Este. The UNESCO world heritage site was designed on behalf of Cardinal Ippolito d’Este of Ferrara in 1550, who desired a palace signifying his new status as governor of Tivoli. The innovative design and creativity of the architectural component in the gardens make the villa gardens one of the most remarkable and comprehensive illustrations of Renaissance culture. Throughout the gardens, you’ll find Italian cypresses, evergreen jasmines and evergreen magnolias - but the true jewels of the garden are the magnificent water features. As you wander down tree-and hedge-lined avenues, passing sculptures and grottoes, you can hear the steady gush of water from the many fountains and ornamental basins.

Frascati vineyard

This afternoon we’ll spend time in Frascati, famous for its wine production, which typically produces light and dry wines with a distinctive taste that makes them perfect for pairing with food. Here, we’ll visit one of the most historic wine estates in the area to learn about the artisanal winemaking traditions that have been kept alive in this region. We tour a Fascati vineyard producing a selection of Frascati wines, which we will enjoy along with some delicious local delicacies.

Some people find that the food on offer in hotels is different than what they’re used to back at home, so we thought we’d put together some guidance to help you know what to expect. We say it’s the perfect excuse to really embrace the Italian way of life!

Breakfast

Many hotels offer a limited choice of hot breakfast items, but breakfast is usually Continental style, with bread roll, jams, cheese, cold meats, cereal and sweet pastries, and juice, coffee and tea available.

Evening meals

Where evening meals are provided in hotels on our tours, you can usually expect three courses with a choice of two or three dishes per course:

  • First course – may be local pasta dish or soup
  • Main course - usually meat or fish course with salad or one or two vegetables
  • Desert – fresh fruit, a local cake/desert or ice cream

Hotels will try to accommodate dietary requirements, however you need to advise of any at the time of booking.

Menus will vary from hotel to hotel, and choice will be more limited than in a normal restaurant.

Note: At some hotels we may be asked to choose your menu the evening before or at breakfast on the day of - this helps the hotel to give a more efficient experience

A la carte options at some hotels

Some hotels have the possibility of upgrading to an a la carte menu. If this were an option, you would be advised of this in resort and pay for this locally and receive a credit towards it. However this is specific to only some hotels, and also at their discretion.

Difference in cooking styles

Some dishes are served cooler in Italy than you might expect – this is done intentionally as it’s thought to preserve the delicate flavours of each ingredient than if it was piping hot. Don’t worry – it’s still fresh and thoroughly cooked!

Some of your favourite Italian dishes have regional differences in Italy, and may be different to how you’d find them at home. Again, we say this is the perfect way to experience authentic Italian cuisine and to celebrate the nuances of different regions.
